ROSE Bikes traces back to 1907, when Heinrich Rose opened a small bicycle shop in Bocholt, Germany, close to the Dutch border. The business survived its early decades partly by selling Dürkopp sewing machines through the winter months when bike sales slowed. Rose stayed a family business through multiple generations, Heinrich’s son took over in 1932, his grandsons Erwin and Walter in 1970, and it remains family-owned today.
Erwin Rose pushed the company into mail-order sales of imported Japanese bicycles in the 1980s, a shift that laid the groundwork for what came next: in the late 1990s, Rose launched its own branded bikes alongside one of Europe’s earliest online bike shops. That combination, in-house bike development sold directly online, became the foundation of the direct-to-consumer model Rose still runs today, one that reportedly hasn’t posted a loss in over 120 years of operation.
What ROSE Is Known For
Rose lets customers configure a bike’s spec, groupset, wheels, finishing kit, largely to order while still selling at close to factory pricing, cutting out the markup that comes from a traditional dealer network. The brand has stayed rooted in the German-speaking market for most of its history and only recently gained wider international attention, partly through its sponsorship of the Unibet Rose Rockets, a UCI ProTeam competing in road racing, and the Rose Racing Circle, which fields riders in elite gravel events.
Materials and Manufacturing Approach
Rose designs and develops its bikes in Germany, with final assembly and quality control also based at its Bocholt facility. Frames are welded in Asia before being shipped back to Germany for assembly, a common split across the industry, and Rose doesn’t publicly disclose the specific manufacturing partners involved in that process.
