Santa Cruz
Santa Cruz Bicycles started in 1993 in a garage-sized space in Santa Cruz, California, founded by former professional skateboarder Rob Roskopp along with Rich Novak of Santa Cruz Skateboards and suspension specialist Mike Marquez. Their first bike, the Tazmon released in 1994, was a single-pivot full-suspension design built around the brand’s founding philosophy: “simply advanced.” Pon Holdings, the Dutch conglomerate that also owns Cannondale and Cervelo, acquired Santa Cruz in July 2015.
What Santa Cruz Is Known For
In 1999, Santa Cruz acquired the rights to Virtual Pivot Point (VPP) suspension from Outland Bikes, and released the first VPP-equipped model, the Blur, in 2002. VPP uses two short, counter-rotating links connecting the front and rear triangles instead of a single pivot, letting engineers tune the suspension’s behavior separately for pedaling efficiency or big-hit absorption depending on the model. Nearly every full-suspension Santa Cruz built since has used some version of VPP, making it one of the most recognizable suspension platforms in mountain biking. Every Santa Cruz frame ships with a lifetime frame warranty and lifetime pivot bearing replacement.
Materials and Frame Technology
Santa Cruz builds primarily in carbon fiber across two tiers, C for a more affordable standard layup and CC for a lighter, top-tier layup, with the frame geometry identical between the two, only the carbon construction differs. While Santa Cruz’s roots and strongest reputation remain squarely in mountain biking, trail, enduro, and downhill in particular, the lineup does extend to the Stigmata, a cyclocross and gravel-capable frame outside the brand’s core off-road focus.
