Specialized
Specialized began in 1974 when 24-year-old Mike Sinyard sold his VW van for $1,500 to fund a cycling trip through Europe. In Milan, he connected with Cinelli, one of Italy’s most respected component makers, and started importing high-end Italian bike parts to sell to California shops, parts that were nearly impossible to find in the US at the time. The company started building its own frames in 1976 and moved to Morgan Hill, California, in 1984, where it’s still headquartered today.
Specialized’s defining moment came in 1981 with the Stumpjumper, widely credited as the first mass-produced mountain bike, a design significant enough that an original model now sits in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. The company weathered a near-bankruptcy in the 1990s after bringing in outside management that led it astray, recovering under Sinyard’s direct leadership again. Sinyard remained CEO for 48 years before retiring in 2022, with Armin Landgraf now running the company.
What Specialized Is Known For
“Innovate or Die” has been Specialized’s stated philosophy for decades, and it shows in how much of the brand’s development goes beyond frames. The Body Geometry system applies ergonomic research, developed with outside physicians, to saddles, shoes, and grips, aiming to reduce pressure points and improve fit rather than treating those components as afterthoughts. Specialized also runs two performance sub-brands: S-Works for its top-tier frames and components, and Roval for wheels and cockpit parts, both developed in-house rather than sourced from third-party suppliers.
Materials and Frame Technology
Specialized builds across carbon and aluminum depending on model tier, with FACT carbon construction used on performance frames like the Tarmac and Diverge, tuned by model for stiffness, weight, or compliance depending on the bike’s intended use. The brand’s product range spans road, gravel, mountain, and e-bikes, with race-level technology from platforms like the Tarmac and Epic typically filtering down into more accessible models over time.
Where to Find Specialized-Style Bikes in Our Range
The Tarmac’s road racing pedigree lines up with our Race Bikes, and the Diverge fits our Gravel Bikes category.
