Scott
Scott didn’t start in cycling at all. Ed Scott, an engineer and ski racer in Sun Valley, Idaho, founded the company in 1958 after inventing the first aluminum ski pole, replacing the bamboo and steel poles that had been standard until then. The brand moved into motocross goggles in 1970 and set up its European headquarters in Fribourg, Switzerland, in 1978, gradually shifting its center of gravity across the Atlantic. Bikes didn’t enter the lineup until 1986, with Scott’s first mountain bike.
Scott’s biggest early moment in cycling came in 1989: the brand’s aerodynamic handlebar, a genuinely strange-looking piece of kit at the time, helped Greg LeMond claw back a 50-second deficit in the final time trial of the Tour de France, winning the race by just eight seconds. In an odd twist most riders don’t know, Scott actually exited the US bicycle market entirely in 1998, only returning in 2005 under the Scott Sports name with a new American headquarters in Ogden, Utah.
What Scott Is Known For
Scott has built its cycling reputation on suspension and weight innovation. The Unishock suspension fork arrived in 1991, and 2002 brought the Genius, a full-suspension platform with a shock adjustable across three separate modes, lockout, all-travel, and traction, controlled through what became the brand’s TwinLoc remote system. In 2003, Scott’s CR1 became the lightest production road frame on the market at just 895 grams. On the racing side, Scott has backed Nino Schurter’s dominant run in cross-country World Cup racing for years, feeding that pedigree directly into the Spark and Scale platforms.
Materials and Frame Technology
Current Scott frames use the brand’s HMX carbon fiber construction across performance road and mountain platforms, paired with SDS rear-end shock absorption technology on select models to manage vibration without a full suspension system. The TwinLoc system remains central to Scott’s full-suspension mountain bikes, letting riders switch suspension behavior on the fly without stopping to adjust a shock manually.
