Diamant is Germany’s oldest bicycle brand still in production, founded in 1885 in Chemnitz by brothers Frederick and William Nevoigt, who started out manufacturing sewing machine parts before adding bicycles to their lineup that same year. The brand’s inventive streak showed early: in 1898 Diamant developed the double-roller chain, a design that became the modern industry standard still used across bicycles, motorcycles, and industrial machinery today, and in 1924 the company built one of the first women’s-specific bicycle designs.
Diamant’s racing pedigree peaked in the 1930s, when the brand’s Model 67 race bike, built with an unusually light frame for its era, helped German riders win gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Trek acquired Diamant in 2002, and while the brand remains headquartered and largely manufactured in Hartmannsdorf near its original Chemnitz home, that acquisition brought Trek’s broader engineering resources into Diamant’s modern e-bike development.
What Diamant Is Known For
Today’s Diamant lineup focuses almost entirely on trekking, city, and e-bikes rather than performance road or mountain bikes, built for daily and long-distance comfort riding across Germany and Europe. The brand markets several model families, Zing, Mandara, Beryll, Suvea, and Zouma among them, spanning step-through, mixte, and men’s frame geometries.
Materials and Motor Technology
Nearly all current Diamant e-bikes run Bosch mid-drive motors through Bosch’s Smart System, with battery capacities ranging from 400Wh up to 800Wh depending on the model, the one notable exception being the lightweight Diamant 365 urban e-bike, which uses a Hyena rear-hub motor instead. Several Diamant models offer a low-maintenance belt drive paired with an Enviolo continuously variable hub gear as an alternative to a traditional chain and derailleur, trading a small amount of drivetrain efficiency for less maintenance over the life of the bike.
