Orbea
Orbea was founded in 1840 in Eibar, in Spain’s Basque Country, by brothers Juan Manuel, Mateo, and Casimiro Orbea, originally as a rifle and pistol manufacturer, part of a long gunsmithing tradition in the region. The company pivoted to bicycles in the 1920s and 1930s, gradually building a name in Spanish cycling, including sponsoring Spain’s Tour de France entry as early as 1934.
What makes Orbea genuinely unusual in the bike industry happened in 1969: facing financial difficulty, the company’s employees banded together and bought it outright, restructuring Orbea as a worker-owned cooperative. Two years later, Orbea joined the Mondragon Cooperative Corporation, a federation of worker cooperatives based in the Basque Country, and moved its factory to nearby Mallabia, where the brand is still headquartered and where every bike is designed, painted, and assembled today.
What Orbea Is Known For
Orbea remains one of the only major bike brands still run as an employee-owned cooperative, a structure that means engineers and production staff hold a direct stake in the company rather than answering to outside shareholders. That ownership model shows up in the brand’s MyO customization program, letting customers personalize color, components, and specifications on their bike, and in patents like iLine, Orbea’s internal shock and dropper post routing system, which the brand has also licensed out to fund social projects. At the top level of racing, Lotto–Intermarché rides the Orca and Orca Aero in the WorldTour, while the Orbea Factory Team competes in off-road stage races like the Cape Epic.
Materials and Frame Technology
Orbea builds with both carbon fiber and hydroformed aluminum depending on the model tier, designed and assembled at the Mallabia facility, though some frame production is outsourced to partners in Portugal and Taiwan, standard practice among high-end bike brands operating at this scale.
