Trek
Trek started in 1976 in a rented red barn in Waterloo, Wisconsin, founded by Dick Burke and Bevil Hogg as a subsidiary of a Milwaukee appliance distributor. With five employees, the company hand-brazed roughly 900 steel touring frames in its first year, aiming squarely at the mid-to-high-end market then dominated by Japanese and Italian imports. The name itself was nearly “Kestrel,” Hogg’s preference, before Burke won out with “Trek,” an Afrikaans word evoking a long, arduous journey. Trek celebrated its 50th anniversary in June 2026.
The company expanded into racing bikes in 1982 and mountain bikes in 1983, well before either category was mainstream in the US. The biggest technical leap came in 1992 with OCLV carbon, a manufacturing process that produced what were then the lightest production frames in the world, at 2.44 pounds. Unlike many competitors now owned by larger holding groups, Trek remains privately held by the Burke family and its employees through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan.
What Trek Is Known For
Trek develops the majority of its technology in-house rather than sourcing it from outside suppliers, including its own component brand, Bontrager, covering wheels, cockpits, and accessories. On the e-bike side, Trek’s Removable Integrated Battery system hides the battery fully inside the frame while still allowing tool-free removal, paired mostly with Bosch motor systems across the range.
Materials and Frame Technology
Current Trek frames build on the OCLV carbon platform established in 1992, refined into different grades across the lineup by weight and price point. IsoSpeed, Trek’s decoupler system that lets the seat tube flex independently of the rest of the frame, remains central to the Domane endurance platform, absorbing road vibration without a separate suspension component.
